Zebra Banana, Blood Banana, Musa zebrina, has bold markings in burgundy-red against green leaves, This color pattern remains on the leaves as the plant matures. Stalk and leaf stems are a pale mauve to burgundy. The roots of this banana do not store well in unheated areas of zones 6 and colder. Storage is best where temperatures do not drop below freezing. Where winters are not severe (Zone 8) roots can be stored in garbage bag but keep roots up off of concrete, stone or brick floors. Winter storage is best by keeping plant in a large pot and where temperatures do not drop below 50 degrees F. Water sparingly during winter months but do not allow soil to dry out completely. Keep plant near a bright window. Leaves are likely to dry out and gradually die but the plant root and stalk should survive until spring. Take outdoors after all danger of frost has past. Plant out in the ground for the summer or grow in a large pot. Feed with a plant food especially formulated for bulbs, such as tulips. Begin watering when plant shows signs of new growth.
This specimen was photographed in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California in mid August, 2004.
