Witch Hazel
Hamamelis virginiana

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a small hardy deciduous tree or shrub native to North America and Asia growing to about 10 feet. The bark is a dark brown. Elliptical leathery leaves are slightly toothed with hairy undersides. Scented, yellow flowers appear in late autumn. These photographs were taken in Bernheim Forest, Bullet County, Kentucky, in June of 1999.

Witch Hazel prefers a moist, lime-free soil and full sun, filtered light or partial shade. This tree is not tolerant of dry conditions or drought. Pruning is not usually necessary, but can be done in winter after the flowering season. Propagation by layering in the spring is best. Propagation by seed will require patience because germination time is notoriously slow.

Besides the forked branches of Witch Hazel having been used as devining rods, medicinal uses have been attributed to this small tree. Distilled extract of young flower-bearing twigs has been applied externally for relief of sprains, bruises, varicose veins, insect bites, hemorrhoids and to stop bleeding. It has also been used as an astringent cosmetic.

A tincture from the bark or leaves may disfigure skin.

Winter hardy in sones 3-8.
