Strawberry Tree, Arbutus unedo is native to Ireland and southern Europe. It can be grown outdoors in zones 7 to 9. In colder climates the evergreen tree can be grown in a large pot to be brought indoors during the winter. The tree grows to about 25 ft. high. Clusters of white to pink flowers appear in autumn with ripe fruit from the old flowers of the previous year. The fruit is semilar in appearance to strawberries, are edible, but have no flavor.
Strawberry Tree can be grown in just about any soil, but will thrive best with good drainage and a sunny location. Propagation is by seed.
The images shown above were photographed at Huntington Botanical Garden, east of Los Angeles, California, in June, 2002.
