Star Fruit, Averrhoa carambola, |
Photograph at left and above were taken in north-central Costa Rica in June, 1999. Besides offering declicous fruit, the Averrhoa carambola plant is a beautiful landscape specimen and can be grown indoors during winter months if offered enough heat and light. |

Averrhoa is a genus of handsome Malaysian trees whose sensitive leaves close when touched. The small purplish flowers are clustered in unique form. The oval five-lobed fruit of Averrhoa carambola is translucent and pleasantly tart. The star-shapped pieces are produced by slicing the fruit crosswise. Start Fruit, Carambola, is becoming an important tropical fruit crop in south Florida and is used as much for its delicious juice as for its flesh.
