One of the easier to grow palms, this species can be grown as far north as zone 8 in protected areas outdoors. It withstands overnight freezes as low as 20 degrees F. and light snowfall of climate zone 8. Mediterranean Fan Palm, Chamaerops hummilis, is easily grown indoors in colder climate zones as containers plants. Soil should be rich, moist and loamy, and plant should be fed monthly with a commercial tropical plant food, or a plant food specifically formulated for palms. It can withstand droughts outdoors once established.
Mediterranean Fan Palm can be grown as a single specimen or in luxuriant clumps of several trees. Delicate fan-shaped leaves make it an ornamental favorite of the Spanish Costa del Sol and the French Riviera.
Photographs were taken at Huntington Botanical Garden east of Los Angeles in June, 2002.
Winter hardy in sones 8 - 10.
