Japanese Pagoda Tree, Chinese Scholar Tree
Sophora japonicaNative to China and Korea, but grown in Japan as well. This tree can, in time, grow to more than 75 ft. tall. It spreads to a width that can equal its height if given enough space. The tree bears yellowish flowers in late summer and is displayed best against a background of evergreens. This very old specimen was photographed in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky, September 1998.
