Crataegus phaenopyrum

This small deciduous thorny tree is native to the Southeastern United States. It will grow to a height of 25 to 30 ft. A similar species - Hawthorn "Winter King" or Crataegus verida is very similar. Both species make excellent lawn trees and add a festive look to the landscape during winter months with their profusion of bright red berries. The berries are said to have medicinal value in the treatment of cardiovascular problems. Zones 4 - 7.
