Cassia fistula

Cassia is a genus of herbs, shrubs and trees which belong to the Fabaceae, or Bean Family. Most species are tropical to subtropical with only a few species able to tolerate moderate frost. All prefer full sun and soil consisting of sandy loam.

Gold Rush Tree, Golden Shower Tree, Indian Laburnum, Pudding Pipe Tree (Cassia fistula) is a small tree originally from India growing to 30 ft. tall, yet perfectly suited for restricted growth indoors in a container. This little tree has extremely graceful foliage. It produces scented clusters of golden-yellow flowers which cascade from the branches makiing the plant look as if it were basking in a heavenly tropical sunset. A truly exotic houseplant.

The photographs above show the tree at the end of the flowering season and were taken in the provence of Alajuela, Costa Rica in June, 1999.

Winter hardy in climate zones 10-11, or as houseplant in cooler climates.
