Ginkgo, Maiden Hair Tree
Ginkgo biloba

A hardy deciduous tree native to Asia of the Ginkgoaceae or Ginkgo Family. Its leaves resemble the Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum) a completely different family of plants. This tree can grow 125 ft. tall at a slight diagonal angel. It is the sole survivor of an ancient family of trees from an earlier geologic era. it produces flowers followed by unpleasant smelling yellowish fruit. There are several varieties of the species such as: Fastigiata, Laciniata, Macrophylla and Sentry.

It is planted in parks and on broad city boulevards. This very old specimen was photographed in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. Its leathery textured leaves protect it from most insect pests and disease. It is resistant to air pollution, drought and extreme hot weather. It can be grown in nearly any kind of soil. Leaves turn a brilliant yellow in autumn and because of their small size they blow away which minimizes the need for raking.

Many claims have been made and substantiated my modern science, that it promotes mental health, and improves memory. It is used extensively as a medicinal herb.

Ginkgo is easily germinated from seed.

Winter hardy in climate zones 5 - 9.
