Coffee, Coffea arabica, belongs to the Madder Family of evergreen shrubs known as Rubiaceae. With at least 25 species now recognized, they orginated in Asia and Africa and are winter hardy outdoors only in zones 10 - 11.
Coffea arabica is the primary commercially grown specie and can also be grown as a houseplant or greenhouse specimen. The flowers are white and very fragrant. Propagate from seed in rich potting soil and offer warmth and light. Can be taken outdoors for the summer in filtered light, gradually into full sun and brought back in before frost.
