The seeds of Cashew hang from the fruit on the bottom outside. The seeds have a bitter poisonous coating (care should be taken in handling these seeds) which are discarded by monkeys in favor of the pulpous, very juicy pineapple-peach-apple tasting fruit. The monkeys are rewarded with the delicious fruit for dispersing the seeds. |
Cashew Nut is a very dignified plant. The attractive leaves are rich-looking purplish green and extremely pleasing to the eye. The comely, richly-scentedf flowers have yellow and pink petals.
These photographs were taken in the provence of Alajuela in northern Costa Rica in June, 1999.
Winter hardy in zones 9-11 or grow as houseplant or greenhouse specimen elsewhere.
